Like other resilient flooring, linoleum telegraphs the shape of whatever’s underneath. Glue tiles to existing vinyl only if it is a single layer, relatively smooth and not cushioned.

Option 1: Install underlayment (special plywood with all voids plugged, one surface sanded and edges milled to interlock). Forbo recommends dispersion-type staples; nails can pop up. Fasten every 4 to 6 inches in the field and every 2 to 3 inches along seams. Sand seams flat.

Option 2: If the old flooring is in relatively good shape and not too cushioned, fill gaps with a floor-leveling compound made with Portland cement and a liquid latex binder. Do not use gypsum-based fillers; they may harbor mildew and interfere with the linoleum adhesive.

How to Install Foam underlayment Plywood Floor

Simple Instructions

Foam underlayment has a plastic strip on one end that goes along the wall and up the wall that will be covered by the baseboard, and the other end has a strip of adhesive tape. As you unroll each roll, the clear plastic end lies on top of the end with adhesive strip and two white pieces of foam will be butted up against each other.


Then   Ensure the two white sides are as close as they can be and lay one over the other and tack it down. That is how you will know if it's on upside down. If the tape strip is down, it is backwards. It is very important that the Foam underlayment run the same direction as the flooring.


Next Step:

Cover the floor with the foam underlayment and then put the sheet should  right up against the first sheet that you installed. Peel back the covering of the adhesive tape on the first sheet and smooth the plastic edge of the second sheet down onto the tape of the first sheet

Remove any additonal foam underlayment with a razor to remove any underlayment around any obstructions like vents and corners 

How to Cut Laminate Flooring When You Are Installing Laminate Floor

plywood can be removed fairly easily. Just cut it into strips as long as there is no vinyl backing left. Getting all the staples removed or beat down is by far the hardest part. If it's ran underneath the cabinets use a sharp razor knife and score it several times and it should break off pretty clean. A lot of staples will have slivers of plywood caught underneath you should either pull out or use needle nose pliers to remove the sliver then hammer then down flush. When you remove the plywood don't want anything sticking up. It's a good idea to refasten the subfloor onto the joist with screws or screw shank underlayment nails. You should see how flat it is too... may have to belt sand some seams.
